The second eldest of six children, Rose McGowan was born on September 5, 1973 in Florence to a French mother and Irish father, who were part of a Cult called "The Children of God", based in Italy. Eventually, the family left Europe when Rose was nine, putting down roots in the western United States.

Soon after her parents divorced and her father left her mother with the children to become a photographer in Europe. But life was not easy for the headstrong young girl, and after saving up some money from odds jobs. After her father suspected she was doing drugs and sent her to a rehab clinic. Rose ran away at thirteen for Los Angeles in hopes of becoming an actress. But below the glamour and glitz of Tinsel town, Rose worked many menial jobs, finding it hard to stay put.

One of her jobs was in a movie theatre where they played movies that where almost to video. Her job was to stand by the door, and lure guys in to see her, and in turn, the movie. Rose would break cookies, so she could eat them, but she was fired for doing so. It was around this time Rose became a certified beautician. Rose would go to gay nightclubs to dance. She wasnt gay but she would go so guys wouldnt hit on her and at the end of the night, she had somewhere to stay. Rose was even once mistaken for a gay man and bashed outside the club, Rose later said, I must have looked like a man?

After hammering the sidewalks doing the audition circuit, Rose landed a small part in the comedy "Encino Man" opposite Brendan Fraser, but it was in 1994 that fate would turn a kind eye towards the five foot three beauty when she was spotted by a casting agent on an L.A. sidewalk, outside a gym, as she had thought it to corny to enter. The chance meeting led to her being cast as the angry young lead in Gregg Araki's "The Doom Generation". The film opened to mixed reviews and a fair amount of controversy, but nevertheless, it helped to expose McGowan to a larger audience, and aided in establishing a fair sized fan base. Several films followed, including the films Bio Dome, Going All the Way, Nowhere, and Phantoms. For Phantoms, Rose shaved her eyebrows and they never grew back. As with so many of its young stars, it was the teen thriller "Scream" which shot Rose into the mainstream of public awareness. She had more success in her lead role in the black comedy Jawbreaker which had mainstream box office success.

Rose dated a number of fellow thespians, including Ryan Phillippe and Matthew Lillard, in 1998 she met shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, whom she later married in 1999. The two have since divorced and Rose is currently seeing actor Ahmet Zappa.

Rose says she loves doing crosswords and painting. Her favorite movie is It happened one night
